Household Hazardous Waste Drop Off Begins in St. Tammany
Parish
White Goods Disposal Process Also Outlined
The Environmental Protection Agency has three household hazardous waste drop off areas in St. Tammany Parish. St. Tammany Parish residents may drop off household hazardous waste at one of the following locations:
The eastern St. Tammany site is located at the eastern gate of Camp Villere. To access the site, take US Hwy 11 to Browns Village Road just north of I-12. Drive about two miles west until you reach the end of the pavement at the East Gate of Camp Villere. The drop off site is just inside the gate on the left. The Slidell area drop off area is open from 8AM to 4 PM, seven days a week, until further notice.
The western St. Tammany site is located by Mandeville High School. To access this site, take the West Causeway Approach to Mandeville High Boulevard. Take Mandeville High Boulevard to circle at the end of the road - look for yellow signs. The Mandeville area drop off is open from 8 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday, until further notice.
The northern St. Tammany site is located near the Parish Jail in Covington. To access this site, take Columbia Street to Champagne St. and follow signage. The drop off site on Polders Lane is behind the Parish jail. The Covington area drop off area is open from 8 AM to 4 PM, Saturdays, Sundays, and Wednesdays until further notice.
Household hazardous waste includes cleaners, pesticides, workshop and paint supplies, automotive supplies, and flammable products such as oil, gas and propane. E-goods, such as computers, televisions, and other small electronics, are accepted at the above drop off sites.
EPA cannot accept commercial or industrial waste, medical waste, ammunition, building materials, vegetation, or debris. No white goods, such as refrigerators or other appliances, will be accepted these sites.
If you need to dispose of large appliances, also known as white goods, please call the EPA White Goods Hotline at 1-800-401-1327. The Hotline is open from 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday, until further notice. White goods include refrigerators and freezers, stoves and ovens, microwave ovens, dishwashers, washers and dryers, air conditioners, and water heaters. The EPA can only collect ‘white goods’ curbside. All other hazardous materials must be brought to a disposal site.
“It is important that we protect our lands and waterways from contaminants during the post-Katrina clean up process,” said Parish President Kevin Davis. “Half-empty pails of paint or left-over cleaning fluids can do great harm to our rivers, bayous and aquifer. During this time of cleaning and rebuilding, we need to take extra care to protect the integrity of our environment.”
