BURN BAN EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY

Parish President Kevin Davis signed an emergency order today for St. Tammany Parish that prohibits burning in the parish.  The continuing incidence of brush fires and backyard debris fires getting out of control has prompted this action.

“Windy and dry conditions have provided fuel to fires in St. Tammany Parish,” said Davis.  “At the request of St. Tammany’s fire chiefs, I am imposing a burn ban effective immediately.  The ban will be lifted as soon as these conditions change for the better.”

Rural residents may apply to their local fire district for a controlled burn not to exceed the existing parish ordinance.

“Our goal with this burn ban is not to cause inconvenience or to issue citations, but to protect the public safety. I strongly urge our residents to comply with this order. Please do not endanger yourselves or others, or risk further damage to your property, by violating this ban,” said Fire Services Director John O’Neil.

Local law enforcement has pledged to vigorously enforce the ban. Penalties for violation can include up to 30 days in jail and/or a $500 fine.
